Android with no Soft Keyboard?

Then you’re probably on Rogers. For some strange reason the HTC Dream doesn’t have the soft keyboard… even though it’s a 1.5 release of Android.

Strange right? Yup.

Problem? No.

Here is how to get the Virtual Keyboard on your Rogers HTC Dream:

UPDATE: Many people have commented around the web that it’s easier to just come here on your phone and download it directly. Doing it this way allows you to skip a few steps.

Make sure you allow untrusted sources for app installations (Settings > Applications) then point your phone here: http://tinyurl.com/htc-ime

Download and Install!

Download “Apps Installer” from the Marketplace. A simple search will do. (it may have a stange looking name. that’s the right one)
Next download the apk file from here.
Put the apk package on your phone via the USB cable.
Install the apk with Apps Installer
1. Unmount your SD card.
2. Load up Apps Installer
3. After finding HTC_IME.apk , long press and choose install.
After installing reboot your Android phone. This step is mostly for safty purposes.
Go to Settings > Locale & Text and you should see Touch Input. Check it.
You may now change the setting and use the virtual keyboard.
Enjoy.

If you want to uninstall the app follow these steps:

Go to: Settings > Applications > Manage Applications
Find Touch Input, click it.
Un install it.
Remove the apk file from the SD drive.

Incase anyone is wondering…. This is the apk file I am using for my rogers phone. And it works wonderfully.

I can not find Apps Installer. what can i do ..

I could not find the “Apps Installer” in the market place. I actually just went to the site and downloaded this file HTC_IME.apk using my handset and installed it. Then followed the steps mentioned above to activate the virtual keyboard. And just enjoying the phone…

Many thanks for this – it has increased the functionality of my Rogers dream immensely!

I wonder if you might have done any work on another problem. Because the Android system does not have ‘speed dial’ I can’t use this as a true hands-free system even with my BlueAnt bluetooth earpiece which has voice commands built in but seems to be looking for speed dial settings on the ‘phone. Any suggesions? The built in voice commands in the Rogers firmware requires touching the keyboard to select numbers recalled from memory.

Brennan. You rock! Thanks for posting this. Just got my Dream a few days ago and the lack of a soft keyboard was driving me nuts. I almost returned the phone because of it.

Just wanted to say thanks! Didnt really want to work when I put the info on the phone via USB, but worked great OTA on the ohone its self… A major flaw has been solved!
